Elin Nordegren Steps Out With Jordan Cameron After Welcoming Baby No. 3

Parenting double-duty! Elin Nordegren emerged for the first time since giving birth to her third child.

The model, 39, and boyfriend Jordan Cameron cheered on her 10-year-old son, Charlie, at a soccer tournament in Florida on Friday, October 18. The couple brought along their newborn for the family outing.

Nordegren glowed in a black, floral-print maxi dress and white sandals. She chatted with Cameron, 31, as he held their first child together. The proud mom took in the game from a chair on the sidelines.

The Sweden native shares daughter Sam, 12, and son Charlie with ex-husband Tiger Woods. The pair split in 2010 following his highly publicized cheating scandal.

Us Weekly reported in June that Nordegren was pregnant. She showed off her baby bump at Charlie’s flag football game at the time.

A source told Us in June that she and Cameron were “very happy about the pregnancy” and preferred to stay out of the spotlight. “Elin maintains a low profile and has a normal, boring life,” the insider revealed. “Florida allows her to live that quiet life. I hear she’s surprised that people care this much that she’s pregnant.”

Woods, for his part, opened up about his coparenting relationship with Nordegren in October 2016. “She’s been one of my best friends and I’ve talked to her about so many different things and she does the same thing with me back and forth,” the golf player, 43, said during an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. “We communicate so much better now, it’s incredible. I wish we would have done that earlier on, but it’s been incredible to have a best friend like that.”

The athlete elaborated on the amicable development. “It becomes two simple things, OK?” he explained. “We have Sam and we have Charlie. And we love them so much that we are going to [do] whatever it takes to make that work. That’s how it happened.”

Woods admitted on Good Morning America in March 2017 that his kids “now dominate my life and I think that’s a good thing.”

Why Does The Flu Shot Hurt So Much?

If you got your flu shot recently, your arm likely felt as though it had been sucker punched in the days afterward. (And if you haven’t received the vaccine yet, here’s your friendly PSA to stop putting it off.)

While that soreness shouldn’t be a reason you don’t get a flu shot ― because again, you really should go get one if you haven’t yet ― it turns out there are a few factors that influence whether or not your flu shot may cause discomfort in the day or two after getting one.

Below, experts explain the reason your flu shot hurts so badly and what you can do to relieve the pain a bit:

Good news: A little discomfort is a good sign.

“The flu shot is made to produce an immune response, so soreness is a sign that it’s working,” Nate Favini, the medical lead at Forward, told HuffPost. “Your body has an inflammatory response, and that’s what gives you immunity against the flu.”

This soreness also means that your immune system is making antibodies in response to the virus it was just injected with, which protects you from the actual flu if you become exposed to it. But if you don’t feel sore after your flu shot, that doesn’t necessarily mean you got a dud injection or that your flu shot isn’t working. You may have a higher pain threshold than you realize, or perhaps you were relaxed while getting your shot (Favini said it can hurt more if you tense your arm muscles during the shot).

If your arm does really hurt for the next day or two after your flu shot, don’t feel guilty about taking a day off of work or going easy on yourself because of the pain. The shot will help your company in the long run: One study found that people who got the flu shot reduced the number of workdays they would have lost due to flu-related illnesses by 32%.

How much it hurts may depend on how the shot was administered.

Slow injections may cause more pain, according to research published in the journal Vaccine. Researchers compared pain measurements in slow versus fast injections among infants and found that a faster shot reduced injection-induced pain when it came to certain vaccines, including the flu shot. A slower injection time means more time for the needle to be in contact with the skin, which could lead to the needle moving around more or even potentially cause muscle tissue damage, both of which make you feel sorer.

While you can’t exactly predict the style of the person giving you the shot, try stroking or applying gentle pressure to the skin near the injection site during the shot, said Michael Grosso, chief medical officer at Huntington Hospital in Huntington, New York. Just give the nurse or pharmacist a heads up if you want to do this step before they get started. They may opt to do it for you so that you don’t accidentally get pricked.

The flu shot may hurt less as you get older.

“Though it’s somewhat an individual thing, in general we should expect injection site pain to be less as we get older as our nervous systems start to wear out,” Grosso told HuffPost. “Adults can generally engage in self-distraction more effectively than children while avoiding behaviors that make shots hurt more, like tensing up the muscle or keeping the arm still afterwards.” (See that? A lot of your pain may be mental buildup.

“There is a real mental component to getting a flu or any other shot,” said Stephen Higgins, medical director for Independence Blue Cross. “People experience pain differently. Some if it is related to our physiologic makeup, and some of it is related to past experiences and anticipation.”

For example, if you’ve previously undergone a medical procedure that involved antibiotics delivered through a needle that stung or if you’ve been inserted with an intravenous catheter for fluids, you might be turned off by the idea of getting the flu vaccine. Even though the needle used for flu shots is much smaller and finer, you could be anticipating the same pain from a past experience.

In severe cases, this can turn into a condition called trypanophobia, in which you feel dizzy, weak or extremely anxious in the presence of needles. And while the flu shot may hurt less as we grow older because of our aging nervous system, Higgins said anxiety around the flu shot could make you perceive more pain.

There are ways to make your shot flu hurt less.

Now that you know why your flu shot may be bugging you, you can still do a few things to help it hurt less both in terms of the level of soreness and the duration of discomfort (i.e. dealing with only a day of pain versus two or more).

“The best ways to minimize injection site pain is to move the arm around after the shot,” Grosso said. This will help circulation in the injection area by giving the muscle the blood flow and oxygen it needs to recover.

You can also place a cool compress on the injection site, which will reduce swelling and pain. Grosso also recommended taking a dose of pain medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen if you’re feeling sore.

But whatever you do, don’t let the fear of pain deter you from getting the vaccine. The flu, which can become serious, kills 20,000 to 80,000 people every year, Grosso said. Last year, 79,400 people in the United States died from the flu, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“A momentary pinch is worth it to prevent a bad case of the flu — or worse,” Grosso said.

Lamar Odom Wants to 'Focus' on His Family After 'DWTS' Exit


Looking ahead! Lamar Odom was eliminated from Dancing With the Stars on Monday, October 7, but he’s already planning on what’s next for him.

“[I’d like to] go celebrate my book, a New York Times bestseller [Darkness to Light: A Memoir],” the season 28 contestant, 39, told Us Weekly and other reporters following the ABC show’s week four taping. “Focus on my children. Maybe [take] a vacation.”

The former professional basketball player went on to say that he will “probably not” be returning to the NBA. “I have some free time on my hands, so maybe I can focus on my public speaking,” the athlete told Us. “Change some lives with my story.”

Before his DWTS exit, Odom was able to perform in front of his family alongside his partner, Peta Murgatroyd. “It’s always great when I see them,” the New York native gushed. “They’re supporting me just being there. They love their Pops.”

The former reality star, who was married to Khloé Kardashian from 2009 to 2016, shares Destiny, 21, and Lamar, 17, with his ex Liza Morales. The Starter Wives Confidential alum, 40, spoke to Us exclusively in September about raising children with Odom during his struggle with addiction.

“He’ll always be an addict,” Morales told Us last month. “It’s always going to be a monkey on his back. That’s something that we have to deal with as a family and educate ourselves [on], especially me, being the mother. I’ve had to educate myself so I can help my kids through that time.”

She added, “It has been a little tough on my son. He shares his father’s name and he has to have that pride in himself and confidence in himself. I’m trying to instill in him that, ‘Yes, you carry your father’s name and you carry it proudly, regardless of how the world views your father. That’s not you. You carry his name, but that’s not you, that’s not your journey.’ As far as his legacy, [Lamar] knows that that’s hard on his son. But they’re good. Lamar loves his kids, they love him. But it’s no secret that it definitely hasn’t been an easy road as a family.”

Victor Garber: Jennifer Garner’s Kids Are 'So Smart' It's 'Daunting'


Victor Garber has a special bond with his former Alias costar Jennifer Garner’s kids, whom she shares with her ex-husband Ben Affleck.

When asked by Us Weekly if he feels like a grandfather figure to Garner’s kids — Violet, 13, Seraphina, 10, and Samuel, 7 — Garber replied, “Definitely.”

“Those children are so daunting and intimidating. They are so smart that I feel unequal,” he told Us at Lifetime’s Patsy and Loretta screening at Carnegie Hall in New York City on Monday, October 7. “They’re just beyond brilliant those kids.”

As for his relationship with the 47-year-old actress, Garber, 70, told Us that she often acts like a “parental figure” in his life — despite their age difference.

“She’s so smart and she takes care of me,” he explained.

Garber and Garner starred on Alias for five seasons from 2001 to 2005. The Titanic actor even married the 13 Going on 30 star and Affleck in 2005. While the pair finalized their divorce in 2018, Garber had nice things to say about the Gone Girl star.

“When I see him, I don’t see him all that much, but we are friends,” he told Us on Monday.

Garber previously told Us that he approves of Garner’s new man, John Miller, too.

“He’s a great guy and they’re friends,” the Tony nominee told Us in September when asked why the couple are the perfect match. “Jen is great. I talked to her for an hour today. She’s doing really well. She’s really happy.”

Us broke the news in October 2018 that Garner had been quietly dating Miller for months. A source told Us in August that Affleck is also a fan of the businessman.

“Ben has no problem with John,” the insider said. “Ben totally trusts him.”

The source added that “having a boyfriend has been the best thing to happen to Ben and Jen” in recent years.

Affleck is “really showing Jen that he can be a better person,” according to the source. “They’re coparenting in a way they never have before.”

How James, Kimberly Van Der Beek Handle 'Parenting Mistakes' With 5 Kids


James Van Der Beek and his pregnant wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, have their hands full with five children at home — and another one on the way!

“The nice thing with this many [kids] is that you see your parenting mistakes in real time,” the Dancing With the Stars contestant, 42, told Us Weekly and other reporters on Monday, October 7, at week four of the ABC show. “Anything you do to them, they immediately do to each other. You realize, ‘Oh wait, we’ve got to really dial in this conflict/resolution thing. [It’s about] just setting the right example.”

The Dawson’s Creek alum and the producer, 37, wed in 2010 and share Olivia, 9, Joshua, 7, Annabel, 5, Emilia, 3, and Gwendolyn, 15 months. The couple announced that Kimberly is pregnant again during Monday’s show.

James followed the reveal up with an Instagram post, reading, “Thrilled beyond belief to announce that another little bundle of joy has picked us to be their family. We chose to have our first ultrasound on camera with our #DWTS  crew capturing the result — something I NEVER thought we’d ever do but @vanderkimberly and I have been through three of those first appointments to discover either no heartbeat, or no baby, and she wanted to share this moment.”

The actor gave advice for families dealing with pregnancy loss, telling Us, “You can’t reason your way out of it and you can’t talk your way out of it. You just have to let yourself go through it and go through the journey and be there for each other. … You can’t judge the pain, you can’t judge the process. … Don’t be afraid to talk about it.”

James and Kimberly chose not to hide the tragedies from their children. “Our approach is to be as honest as possible and [not] try to sugarcoat anything and they get it,” the Connecticut native explained. “They get the light and the dark. You tend to think, ‘Oh, they’re too young to understand.’ But they do.”

Stomach bloating: Tummy swelling may signify this life-threatening disease

Stomach bloating is typically the result of binging on certain gassy foods and drinks. Most people report a stretchy, puffy sensation in their tummy and painful abdominal cramps. While overhauling one’s diet tends to alleviate symptoms, some people may find the problem persists. If simple remedies do not help, it may signify a more serious health condition.

One serious underlying cause is pancreatic cancer. As the NHS explained, pancreatic cancer is caused by the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of cells in the pancreas, a large gland that’s part of the digestive system.

According to Pancreatic Cancer UK, pancreatic cancer can sometimes cause fluid to build up in the tummy area (abdomen).

This is called ascites and it can cause pain and discomfort.

“You may have swelling in your tummy and you may feel full quickly when you eat,” explained the health body.

Other symptoms of pancreatic cancer include:

  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice) – it also may cause dark yellow or orange pee, pale-coloured poo and itchy skin
  • Feeling sick and being sick
  • Changes in bowel movements (diarrhoea or constipation)
  • Fever and shivering
  • Indigestion
  • Blood clots

“It’s important to remember that these symptoms can be caused by many different conditions and are not usually the result of cancer,” explained the NHS.

It added: “You should contact a GP if you’re concerned or these symptoms start suddenly.”

A more common cause of bloating is a reaction to diet.

As Harvard Health explained, the main culprits are in a group known as FODMAPs (fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides and polyols).

Examples include wheat, rye, onions, garlic, legumes (chickpeas, lentils, beans), honey, pistachios, cashews, asparagus, and artichokes.

Foods or drinks with fructose or artificial sweeteners are also on the FODMAP list.

“We all have an increased amount of gas in the body after eating them but some of us react to them more severely than others,” explained Dr. Kyle Staller, a gastroenterologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital.

If that’s the case, it helps to identify which of these foods you react to and avoid them, he says.

Keeping a food diary is a handy way to identify the worst culprits, added the NHS.

Psychedelic drug to be tested for treatment-resistant depression in Houston

Psilocybin, a psychedelic drug believed to help rewire the brain, is now being studied to relieve treatment-resistant depression at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) as part of a global Phase II clinical trial.

“It is a medication that can change or alter perceptions, cognition, thinking, and how minds see the environment,” said Sudhakar Selvaraj, MD, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Faillace Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. “This therapy, if it works, could help at least a portion of people get relief from their depression and get back to day-to-day life.”

A 2012 study on the effects of psilocybin on the brain revealed that the drug may help create new circuits in the brain while potentially quieting others that may link to depression. Though the body will clear the drug in a matter of hours, the potential effects could last for several months or longer.

A previous study at Johns Hopkins University on the effects of the drug in cancer patients suggested that psilocybin therapy may lessen depressive symptoms. Psilocybin is broken down by the body to produce psilocin, which affects the serotonin system that regulates mood.

“It is not a drug that’s given to someone and then you just wait and see what happens. The therapists guide the patients through the experience after the administration of the medication,” Selvaraj said.

Participants in the double-blind study receive a single dose of the medication, either 25 mg, 10 mg or 1 mg. Neither the patient nor the study physician will know which dose participants are receiving. After taking the medication, patients are supervised by two therapists for eight hours in a specially designed, home-like, treatment room. Patients have preparation sessions with their therapists before the dosing day, and integration sessions afterwards.

Individuals participating in the trial will answer a questionnaire to measure depression symptoms the day before and the day after taking the single dose—and again one, three, six, nine and 12 weeks out.

Currently, psilocybin is a controlled Schedule 1 substance and is not approved in the U.S. to treat depression. However, the Food and Drug Administration has approved its use in this trial, and has designated this program of psilocybin therapy for treatment-resistant depression a Breakthrough Therapy.

The 17 Best Calorie-Burning Exercises, Ranked In Order Of Effectiveness

If you’re dedicating valuable time in your day to a sweat sesh, chances are you want to know it’s actually worth your time, right? Okay, now raise your hand if you’ve heard different fitness philosophies about the most-effective way to rev your heart rate. Specifically, some people say cardio is the ultimate calorie-burner, while other swear by strength training. Well, it’s time to set the record straight.

But yeah, which exercises burn the most calories exactly? Unsurprisingly, on a list of the best burners below—ranked in order of effectiveness—aerobic exercise tends to win in terms of immediate results. (FYI: Calorie burn is estimated for a 125-pound person and a 185-pound person, according to guidelines from the American College of Sports Medicine. The more you weigh, the more calories you tend to burn on any particular task—but a lot of other factors come in to play, too, so this isn’t an exact science.) But there a quite a few top contenders from the weight category too.

The burn: 582–864 calories/hour

Try doing a set of kettlebell swings, kettlebell squats, and kettlebell push presses. Then, rest for 15 to 20 seconds after completing the three moves. This method of training targets your upper body, lower body, and core. “If your gym does not have traditional sled, try tying a TRX around a few plates or even a kettlebell,” says Miranda. “Charge across the gym floor by driving the weight forward with your entire body.” To get the most calorie bang for your buck, aim to do a lot of reps, at high intensity, but for a short amount of time, she says.

  • 10–15 seconds of work
  • 12–15 reps
  • Rest about 20–30 seconds in between each rep

12. Strength training

The burn: 341–504 calories/hour

The bonus burn: You’ll increase your afterburn by working your muscles to exhaustion each set instead of stopping at an arbitrary rep range like 10 or 12, says Miranda. And focus on compound movements that employ more muscle groups over more joints. “You’ll skyrocket your EPOC by swapping out exercises like bicep curls for squats, and crunches for cleans,” she says.

The burn: 340–505 calories/hour

The bonus burn: “Research has shown that shortening the rest interval will increase EPOC,” says Miranda. “If you’ve been doing a circuit of 5 different weight exercises for 30 seconds of work and 20 seconds of rest, try decreasing the rest to 10 seconds.”

In a normal circuit, you’d perform each set at a maximum intensity followed by a long rest. But the “metabolic resistance training” method requires you to maintain a high (but sub-max) intensity throughout the workout, with little rest between sets for the entire session.

14. Elliptical

The burn: 322-478 calories/hour (at a resistance level of 8)

The bonus burn: If you’re after a better burn, don’t keep the same pace the entire time you’re on the elliptical. Vary the incline and levels of resistance to keep things interesting (read: challenging).

Four Loko continues to wreak havoc among young drinkers

Supersized alcopops pose unique risks to young drinkers, despite new serving size labels mandated by the Federal Trade Commission. Two new studies led by Dr. Matthew Rossheim at George Mason University’s College of Health and Human Services examine the issue.

Supersized alcopops—such as Four Loko—are sugar-sweetened beverages with as much as 14% alcohol-by-volume (abv) or 5.5 standard alcoholic drinks in one 23.5 oz. can. The studies looked at consumption in three states and found that most college students who drank Four Loko first did so when they were under the legal drinking age, many experienced dangerous effects such as blacking out or vomiting while consuming it, and most grossly underestimated its alcohol content despite bearing new mandated labels.

Study Shows New FTC-Mandated Labels Do Not Adequately Deter Overconsumption

One of the studies, published today in the American Journal of Drug and Alcohol Abuse, surveyed young college students in three states to assess how accurately they could estimate the alcohol content in Four Loko, the most commonly consumed supersized alcopop among underage drinkers. Using survey data collected in college classrooms by Rossheim and colleagues, the study found that even when cans included the Federal Trade Commission’s newly-mandated label, the majority of young adults (57%) underestimated Four Loko’s alcohol content by one or more drinks. Students were more successful at estimating the alcohol content of Four Loko’s 8% alcohol version (sold in Montana) than its higher alcohol concentrations (sold in Virginia and Florida). More than 60% of Florida students and more than 70% of Virginia students underestimated Four Loko’s alcohol content by one or more standard drinks, compared to 45% of Montana students. Nearly one-third (31%) of participants in Florida and nearly one-half (49%) of participants in Virginia underestimated the alcohol content of Four Loko by two or more standard drinks, compared to only 4% in Montana.

“Even with the FTC-mandated labels, college students are drastically underestimating the amount of alcohol in a single can. In states that sell 12% abv Four Loko, 65% of students underestimated it alcohol content by at least one drink and 38% underestimates by two or more drinks,” explains Rossheim. “This underestimation is dangerous and could lead to overconsumption, blacking out, and decisions to drive after drinking, among other risky behaviors.”

Females were twice as likely as males to underestimate alcohol content by one or more drinks and three times as likely to underestimate alcohol content by two or more drinks. Students who had never heard of or seen Four Loko before were also twice as likely to underestimate the alcohol content by one or more drinks compared to those who were aware of it.

Study Shows First-Time Drinkers Experienced Dangerous Effects, Particularly in States Where Four Loko has Higher Alcohol Content

A companion study, published in August in the same journal, assessed first time consumption of Four Loko among college students. Drawing on the experiences of 336 underage college students at universities in Virginia, Florida, and Montana, the study found that nearly all respondents who had consumed Four Loko first did so while underage (93%).

The study also asked about consequences from drinking Four Loko. Students in Virginia and Florida, where Four Loko’s alcohol by volume ranges from 12 to 14 percent, were twice as likely to black out and vomit their first time drinking it as students in Montana, where only the 8% version is available. More than half (57%) of students consumed at least one can their first time, and 10% drank two or more cans. Of underage drinkers who finished at least one can, 36% blacked out and 21% vomited. Drinkers who were male, paid for the drink, or tried it at a younger age were far more likely to drink at least one entire can.

“These studies suggest that the weaker version of Four Loko available in Montana gives students a better shot at accurately estimating its alcohol content and avoiding blacking out or vomiting on first use,” explains Rossheim. “Limiting the alcohol content of these beverages could help reduce the harmful effects they have on young people.”

Following the death of a 14-year old girl who had consumed supersized alcopops, Canada reclassified the beverages last May and restricted the alcohol content in each container to 1.5 standard alcoholic drinks. In 2015, 17 U.S. State Attorneys General wrote to the manufacturer of Four Loko requesting that they reduce the abv of their product from 12% to the industry standard of 8%. Beyond ignoring this request, the manufacturers have since released several new flavors with even greater alcohol content, 14% abv.
