One tip to maintaining eye health is the 20/20/20 rule.
This isn’t a play on the phrase 20-20 vision, it’s an exercise.
Specifically, it is an exercise that recommends every 20 minutes taking a 20 second break to look at something 20 feet away.
Other tips include going for regular eye tests.
These tests will enable any problems to be identified early and, if necessary, treated.
Other ways to maintain eye health include dietary decisions.
Some foods are better for the eyes than others.
Fish can help maintain eye health due to the high levels of omega-3 oils.
These oils, some studies say, can reverse a condition that affects those who sit in front of a screen for too long called dry eye.
Other foods that can help include nuts and legumes, as these are also high in those omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E.
Nuts are available in most supermarkets and the ones that can help include:
• Walnuts
• Brazil nuts
• Cashews
• Peanuts.
While it’s an old tale told to encourage small children to eat vegetables, the notion that carrots can improve your eyesight is not without some truth.
Carrots contain high levels of vitamin A that plays a key role in vision, helping the retina to absorb light.
That other orange favourite, sweet potato, can also be of use as, like carrots, they are high in beta carotene and a source of vitamin E.
Although beta carotene on its own may not help eyesight, the reason for its inclusion is that the body uses it make vitamin A, which does help improve eyesight.
A vegetarian or vegan diet is not the only dietary way for maintaining healthy eyesight.
Beef could also be of assistance.
The meat is rich in zinc, a compound that has been linked to healthy eyes as some studies say it could delay sight loss and potentially put off macular degeneration.
Should neither beef, carrots or sweet potato take your fancy, water can help prevent dehydration and make sure there’s not a single dry eye in your home.
