Around 3.5 million people are thought to suffer from one of more than 7,000 illnesses such as muscular dystrophies or Huntington’s disease. Sajid Javid will today unveil the Rare Diseases Action Plan for England containing 16 commitments to improve care.

The Health Secretary said: “This action plan will speed up diagnoses and care and allow our fantastic workforce to better support patients, by drawing upon the UK’s world-leading science and technology.”

Points in the plan include a £40million boost for the National Institute for Health Research and improvements to newborn screening.
