High blood pressure – the one breakfast swap to lower your risk of deadly hypertension

High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. But, you could lower your risk of developing hypertension by swapping coffee for tea, it’s been claimed.

High blood pressure – which is also known as hypertension – puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.

It could be caused by eating an unhealthy diet, or by not doing enough exercise.

You could lower your risk of deadly hypertension by simply swapping your daily cup of coffee for tea, it’s been claimed.

Coffee may be raising your blood pressure, while tea could actually protect against hypertension, according to Healthspan’s medical director, Dr Sarah Brewer.

Tea is packed full of beneficial antioxidants that reduce the stickiness of your blood, as well as your overall blood pressure, she said.

Just a single mug of green tea each day could lower your risk of high blood pressure by almost half.

Two mugs of tea every day may lead to a 65 percent lower chance of hypertension, she added.

“Coffee increases blood pressure, but tea may help to lower it,” Dr Brewer told Express Health.

“Over 30 percent of the dry weight of tea leaves consists of powerful flavonoid antioxidants with beneficial effects on blood pressure, blood stickiness and cholesterol balance.

“Compared with non-tea drinkers, having four cups of tea per day also halves the risk of a heart attack, while the incidence of stroke is halved in people who drink at least five cups of green tea per day compared with those who drink none.

“Green tea has a more pronounced action than black tea, but both are worthwhile.”

If you do decide to start drinking more tea, you should avoid using sugar, she added.

Meanwhile, you could also lower your risk of high blood pressure by drinking more pomegranate juice, it’s been claimed.

It’s loaded with potassium and other heart-healthy nutrients, and has three times the antioxidant activity than green tea, scientists have revealed.

The polyphenols, vitamins and minerals in pomegranate juice greatly outnumbered those in other fruit juice.
