But there is a darker side to sausages.
They could also play a role in raising your cholesterol and increasing your chances of developing serious conditions.
In order to maintain a healthy diet, you need to maintain healthy levels of cholesterol.
There are two types, LDL and HDL.
LDL, or low-density lipo-protein, is bad cholesterol; it builds up in your arteries and can cause serious issues.
HDL, or high-density lipo-protein, is good cholesterol; this helps keep the heart strong and removes LDL from your bloodstream.
In short, you want as much HDL and as little LDL as you can.
One of the best ways to lower your LDL is through your diet.
Foods high in saturated fat increase your LDL cholesterol levels.
And this includes sausages.
It’s not just those little pork cylinders that increase your cholesterol.
The NHS notes that other foods high in saturated fat include:
• Meat pies
• Fatty cuts of meat
• Butter
• Ghee
• Lard
• Cream
• Hard cheeses
• Cakes and biscuits
• Foods containing coconut or palm oil
If you’re looking to increase your HDL and lower LDL, there are some healthy alternatives that do both:
• Mackerel
• Salmon
• Nuts such as almonds and cashews
• Seeds
• Avocados
• Vegetable oils and spreads
