Dr Sheila Dugan, a physician and rehabilitation specialist said: “One good place to begin improving your food choices is to eliminate sugary drinks – and not just soda, but juices.
“Sugar increases belly fat and fibre reduces belly fat; thus, when you’re juicing fruits, you’re removing the fibre, leaving pure sugar.
“So, one quick fix, a very concrete fix, would be eliminating sugary drinks.
“Replacing sugary beverages with water will help dramatically cut down your sugar intake, and then once you’ve taken that step, you can figure out how to cut down on foods that are high in sugar.
“If you have a sweet tooth and need to put that final accent to your meal, eat an apple, melon or fresh berries. Just remember, fruit is not a substitute for vegetables.”

Added sugar in the diet is extremely unhealthy.
Sugar provides no vitamins or minerals and consuming too much of it will lead to weight gain.
Numerous studies have shown that people who eat more added sugar tend to have more visceral fat.
Added sugar contains roughly 50 percent fructose, a simple sugar which is metabolised by the liver causing dangerous health consequences.
The trouble with belly fat is that it’s not limited to the extra layer of padding located just below the skin (subcutaneous fat), said Mayo Clinic.
It continued: “It also includes visceral fat — which lies deep inside your abdomen, surrounding your internal organs.
“Although subcutaneous fat poses cosmetic concerns, visceral fat is linked with far more dangerous health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol and breathing problems.
“Research also associates belly fat with an increased risk of premature death — regardless of overall weight.”
You should try to exercise for at least 30 minutes every day, which helps you burn calories, advises LiveStrong.
The health site explains: “A weight loss of five to 10 percent of your total body weight can help reduce visceral fat stores. To achieve that, your daily caloric balance (calories consumed minus calories burned) needs to be negative.”
For optimal calorie burning, the health body recommends engaging in any moderate-intensity exercise that gets your heart pumping, such as circuit training, brisk walking, biking.
A University of Virginia study also found that high intensity interval training attacks total abdominal fat, including visceral and subcutaneous fat.
