There is mounting evidence that diet is essential for warding off disease. Vegetables and fruit are associated with lower risk of chronic illnesses, due to their unique nutritional profiles. One drink in particular could boost the chances of living a long life due to its potent antioxidants. The beverage has also proven successful at lowering high blood pressure.
Cancer risk
Fruits and vegetables are able to inhibit cancer cells due to their unparalleled concentrations of antioxidants.
Some sources argue that prunes have antioxidants that rival those of blueberries, due to their inimitable dietary fibre and polyphonic content.
According to research published in Critical Review in Food Science and Nutrition, the fruit and its derivations could thwart cancer growth by preventing constipation.
To study these anti-cancerous effects, researchers studied laboratory-prepared plum extract of plum for their polyphenols and flavonoids.
“We found that PE60, a commercial plum extract, was rich in phenolic/flavonoids contents and significantly inhibited colon cancer growth,” they wrote.
“The laboratory preparation of methanol extract of plum skin when adjusted for polyphonic contents showed similar effects to that of PE60.”
What’s more, these same nutrients have been shown to have lowering effects on other precursors of disease such as high blood pressure.
High blood pressure
High blood pressure is a risk factor for myriad complications, and should be managed promptly.
Fortunately, there is evidence that prune juice could enable this by significantly lowering blood pressure in the space of a few days.
Research has put prune juice’s ability to lower hypertension down to its high potassium concentrations.
Potassium is key for many of the key functions in the body.
It helps the body maintain healthy fluid levels in cells, regulates muscle contractions, and balances sodium levels in the blood.
“Potassium is necessary for the normal function of all cells. It regulates the heartbeat, ensures proper function of the muscles and nerves, and is vital for synthesising protein and metabolising carbohydrates,” explains Harvard Health.
“Diets that emphasise greater potassium intake can help keep blood pressure in a healthy range, compared with potassium-poor diets.”
Because salt is rife in the Western diet, optimising potassium intake is key to avoiding issues with cardiovascular heart.
In fact, research shows that higher potassium intake and low sodium intake could curtail the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular complications.
This was illustrated in one study which highlighted potassium’s ability to counteract high sodium levels, which is behind a variety of circulation and heart problems.
In 2010, researchers found that people who drank prune juice or ate prune daily had lower blood pressure as well as a lower risk of hypertension.
A reduction of blood pressure was observed after just a single dose, of 11.5 grams of prunes.
What’s more, the double dose of prunes prompted a systolic blood pressure, which dictates cardiovascular health risk “significantly”, according to researchers.
