Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis welcomed their first child in 2014, but Kutcher’s parenting journey started well before that. In 2005, the That ’70s Show star became a stepdad to ex Demi Moore‘s three daughters, Scout, Tallulah, and Rumer, who she shares with ex Bruce Willis.
“I was 26, bearing the responsibility of an 8-year-old, a 10-year-old, and a 12-year-old,” Kutcher told Esquire. “That’s how some teen parents must experience their twenties.”
The actor said he loves kids — “I wouldn’t have gotten married to a woman that had three kids if I didn’t” — and he still maintains a relationship with the girls into their adulthood. The couple then tragically had a late-term miscarriage and began a years-long fertility journey.
“Losing a kid that you think you’re going to have, and that close to thinking you’re going to have a kid, is really, really painful,” he said. “…The idea of having another kid would have been incredible.”
It’s a heartwrenching event that Kutcher has tried to find some peace with.
“For whatever reason, I had to have that experience.”
Along with his three stepdaughters, Kutcher has a biological daughter, Wyatt, 8, and a son, Dimitri, 6, with Kunis. And no matter the acting jobs that come his way, “Dad” is the role that is most important to him. He stars in his latest movie,Your Place or Mine alongside Reese Witherspoon, but his appearance in the rom-com almost didn’t happen because of two significant problems.
Shooting was set to happen during the school year, and in Georgia, and that was not going to work for Kutcher. He didn’t want to give up that kind of time with his kids nor his “den leader” position for Dimitri’s Cub Scout pack, and so he negotiated with Netflix to have them take the extra cost of shooting in L.A. (The Peach State offers a nice tax break!) out of his salary.
“He loves his family so deeply and really is such an incredible dad who shows up every day for his kids,” Witherspoon told Esquire. “There is no pretense. He is just very comfortable in his own skin. And did I mention he is hysterically funny?”
The feeling is certainly mutual. Kutcher has said he is impressed with the Legally Blonde star’s ability to juggle everything. We have to hope she used her signature Elle Woods line when she heard that: “What, like it’s hard?”
