Currently, CBD consumers in the UK stand at 1.3 million, and it’s estimated that consumption will continue to increase by double digits, with more and more people discovering the benefits and opting for natural, sustainable products to improve their health and wellbeing. CBD has been shown to treat anxiety, pain relief, sleep disorders, low mood, and autoimmune conditions and inflammation-related complaints.
But there are lesser-known health complaints CBD could help with, according to Kemmy Gichaba, Osteopath and creator of Holistic Impact, a new CBD and essentials oils range (www.holisticimpact.co.uk).
1. Balancing hormones
Fluctuating hormones happens to both men and women, but in different ways. Kemmy explained: “This is because we have different endocrine organs and cycles with the most common times for fluctuation during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.
“It can also occur at any time, causing symptoms like fatigue, headaches, blurred vision, mood swings and weight loss/gain. There are studies which suggest CBD can help with the balancing of hormones because it is effective in influencing hormones like cortisol, melatonin, and oestrogen which can help to bring your body into balance and reduce symptoms.”
2. Easing IBS
Research suggests that CBD shows promise in managing the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Kemmy said: “Inflammation is one of the main triggers of IBS, and thanks to the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD, it is thought to help treat pain and associated symptoms of IBS.
“In addition, because there are cannabinoid receptors all over our body, including our stomachs, it’s possible that ingesting cannabis-derived products, like CBD, may help with digestive symptoms.
“Lastly, IBS can often be caused by lifestyle factors such as stress and anxiety. With CBD recognised to help manage these conditions, it is likely that it could help with the management of IBS by offering a natural and effective way to manage stress, anxiety, and low mood.”
3. Aches and pains
As natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds, cannabinoids found in CBD have the potential to provide relief of joint pain and swelling.
Kemmy advised: “Cannabidiol oil has direct effects on the endocannabinoid system in the brain, which enhances the effects of other brain chemicals, such as serotonin and anandamide, to reduce pain perception. The most effective way to manage aches and pains with CBD are via topical treatments which are applied directly to the area. These can work almost instantaneously.
“For intensive, fast-acting relief, try Holistic Impact CBD Body Salve (www.holisticimpact.co.uk), it contains 1500mg (90ml) of active, highly concentrated CBD combined with Eucalyptus and Lavender oils which are also known to treat muscle and joint pain, as well as being antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and providing a calming effect.”
4. Diabetes
According to some researchers, CBD may have a role in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, especially in the early disease stages.
Kemmy said: “The benefits of CBD for treating diabetes-related health problems may include reduced inflammation and improved blood glucose control, with research providing evidence that CBD is effective in lowering blood sugar and increasing insulin production in Type 2 diabetics.
“There is currently no cure for diabetes, so it is important to consult your doctor or a health professional before using CBD to manage diabetes.”
5. Insomnia
CBD’s potential as a sleep aid could simply be due to its relaxing, anxiety-reducing effects. said Kemmy.
He added: “People who suffer from insomnia have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep at night. This disorder affects daytime wakefulness, ability to concentrate, and mood. Because of their history of poor sleep, people with insomnia may suffer from anxiety about getting inadequate sleep, which can then increase sleeplessness at night.
“Given the potential positive outcomes of CBD treating anxiety, it is speculated that CBD may also help reduce the anxiety associated with insomnia.”
6. Cardiovascular health
Some animal and cell studies have suggested a role for CBD in protecting the heart by relaxing blood vessels, reducing inflammation, and combating oxidative stress.
Kemmy said: “CBD was associated with more relaxed arteries and less damage to blood vessels in animal models of heart disease.
“In various studies of such animals, it was linked to more regular heart rhythms, reduced heart rate and blood pressure in response to stress, and reduced damage to the heart and brain from clogged blood vessels.
“Although the initial research is promising, more studies are required to explore whether CBD can be beneficial for cardiovascular health.”
