Or more to the point, is there one that’s better than all the others, that will save us a bit of chemist admin as we trawl through the best ones?

Yes, according to Bruce N. Ames, there is.

According to the American scientist, the most effective supplement to take is a multivitamin.

A multivitamin is, put simply, a supplement that contains a number of vitamins.

There are of course a few caveats to this answer.

Firstly, it depends on what that multivitamin is made up of.

Secondly, your existing diet as one multivitamin won’t make any difference against wave after wave after wave of saturated fat and salt.

However, if taken alongside a balanced and healthy diet, there are benefits to the multivitamin approach.

One of the benefits of packing lots of different vitamins into one pill is that every vitamin area receives a little top up of that vitamin.

For example, if your multivitamin has vitamins C, D and E, then you will have a little increase as opposed to a boost if you took a vitamin which just had one vitamin in it.

Holland and Barrett expand on this with their website saying: “A multivitamin can plug any small but critical nutritional gaps in your diet, helping to prevent low intakes.”

Multivitamins can help boost and sustain your immune system if they contain both zinc and vitamin C.

They can increase your metabolism too which helps, although this will be most effective if you are young, obese, poor or elderly.

They’re effectively a multi-tool in that regard and are useful for thousands.

According to Holland and Barrett, they are the most popular vitamin supplement in the UK.

Whilst they can be useful, they are nevertheless a supplement not a replacement.

At a time when we’re all trying to stay healthy, there is no replacement for a balanced diet and regular exercise.

This means getting outside, despite the temperature, and getting your body moving.
