James Corden recently stepped out and—even while wearing a hoodie and shorts—it’s clear he’s absolutely killing his promise to himself to be healthy and to drop weight.
The 42-year-old host of The Late Late Show partnered with WW (formerly Weight Watchers) at the start of 2021 to transform his health after years of neglected New Year’s resolutions.
“I’ve realized that every year for the past decade—probably even 15 years—on January 1 I’ve told myself that this is the year I’m going on a diet,” Corden explained during an emotional announcement. “I’m going to lose a load of weight. I’m fed up with the way I look. I’m fed up with being unhealthy. And as you can see, well, it hasn’t [worked].”
He says his biggest problem has always been that he constantly goes on weight-loss plans and only sees short-term results, losing 10 pounds in a month and then a couple months later being 20 pounds heavier than he was at the start. This is what led him to ask WW for help, believing they have all the tools in place to make this year one where he sees real changes.
And after several weeks, he spoke with Oprah Winfrey to give an update on his experience so far.
“As a man, it isn’t very sexy to say that you’re on a diet or it’s not very manly somehow to want to make changes in your health,” Corden said during the interview. “And I actually think it’s the single most positive and sexy thing you can do to say, ‘I would like to be bit healthier. I would like to feel better.'”
After beginning his journey on January 2, Corden says he’s already found the experience incredibly transformative, boasting his favorite chickpea pizza recipe. But he admits the progress he made might subconsciously be because he opened up about his journey to the public.
“As soon as you open yourself up to people and say this is how I’m feeling, you will be met by a wave of people going, ‘How can I help?’ Whereas if I hold on to those things, I’m never going to get that sort of support.”
Yes, having support in his corner plays a big role. But for the first time, he says he’s determined to finish this journey and actually feels that he can. And after losing 16 pounds in the first six weeks, it looks like Corden isn’t giving up anytime soon.
