Lorraine: Dr Hilary discusses symptoms of Lyme disease

The 57-year-old singer is committed to her 2023/2024 tour across the UK, but there was a time when performing on stage led to debilitating blackouts.

Back in 2003, unbeknown to Shania Twain, the That Don’t Impress Me Much singer had been bitten by an infected tick.

“The tick was infected with Lyme disease, and I did get Lyme disease,” Shania revealed.

About to turn 58 on August 28, the Canadian star recalled her symptoms soon after the bite.

“My symptoms were quite scary because, before I was diagnosed, I was on stage [feeling] very dizzy,” Shania said.

“I was losing my balance, I was afraid I was gonna fall off the stage.”

Shania told Vanity Fair: “I was having these very, very, very millisecond blackouts, but regularly, every minute or every 30 seconds.”

Lyme disease

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection, the NHS says, which leads to a “circular or oval-shaped rash” around the tick bite.

The bullseye rash can appear three months post-infection but typically shows up within four weeks of being bitten.

Flu-like symptoms are also common in the weeks following a bite, which can lead to:

• A high temperature
• Feeling hot and shivery
• Muscle and joint pain
• Tiredness
• Loss of energy.

If caught in time, people can be treated with antibiotics to clear the infection.

However, some people diagnosed with Lyme disease continue to suffer from symptoms “for years”.

Shania stated her singing voice was “never the same” after being infected with Lyme disease.

The Man, I Feel Like A Woman! songstress endured two open-throat procedures where Gore-Tex rods were inserted to stabilise her throat.

While both operations were successful, Shania was hesitant (at first) to hear her voice.

“After I had the surgery, I was petrified to make a sound. I didn’t know what was going to come out,” she revealed to InStyle.

While Shania told Yahoo Canada that she sings “differently” now, she is “loves it”.
