Redness, dry spots, and endless inflammation: sensitive skin can be one of the least-fun skin types out there. Using new products might result in inflammation, itchiness and days of redness no amount of makeup can cover, leaving you with seemingly few options.
So it’s fair enough that your approach to skincare is likely a cautious one.
But hear us our for a second: mums are so particular with what they put on their baby’s skin, so why shouldn’t we be the same? Because if it’s safe enough for a baby, then it might just be gentle enough for you, right?
Long relegated to change tables and hidden deep inside nappy bags, baby products are yet to receive the mainstream credit they deserve for helping – and healing – sensitive skin. Not only are they carefully formulated to be extra gentle and nurturing on delicate skin, but they’re generally fragrance free and organic.
Founder of Lullaby Skincare (Australia’s luxury organic skincare for babies), Kirsty Gow-Gates, ran with the idea, creating products that are perfect for you and your Bub, especially for those with sensitive eczema-prone skin.
To find out more, we asked her a few questions which you can read below.
How common is using baby products as an adult?
Babies have extra delicate skin which can be prone to rashes, irritation, dryness, and chafing. Organic skincare products designed for newborns, such as Lullaby Skincare, are carefully formulated to nourish and protect the skin whilst being completely free from harmful toxins. For this reason, baby skincare is not limited to babies.
Many dermatologists recommend baby products to their adult patients who have sensitive skin. Carefully formulated with plant-based organic ingredients, the products are completed free from any harsh chemicals. This includes everyday products such as body and hair wash, lotion and SPF50+ sunscreen. Being ultra-gentle and pure means, they can also assist in helping with skin irritations such as eczema.
Why does it work so well?
It is ideal to use the best of what nature has to offer and that which is bio-compatible with both your face and body. Sensitive skin can benefit from using pure and natural baby lotions, baby washes, baby haircare products and sunscreens that are not packed with synthetics as you’ll find with most brands on the market.
There is a lot of false marketing around various adult skincare brands who lead us to believe they are ‘natural’ or ‘organic’, when in fact, they are packed with harsh chemicals – they may contain a small amount of ‘organic’ ingredients, but the majority of the formulations often consists of synthetic fillers. This is particularly the case with luxury brands for adults! Many consists of parabens, sulphates, petroleum and phthalates, which disrupt the hormonal balance in the skin and can cause breakouts, rashes and even more serious issues such as lesions on the skin.
What ingredients should people with sensitive skin look for and avoid in products?
High quality natural and organic ingredients are important for sensitive skin. Cold pressed Aloe Vera is a magic ingredient that soothes, heals, moisturises and protects. In addition to Aloe Vera, other nurturing and nourishing ingredients that are ideal for sensitive skin include jojoba oil, avocado oil, chamomile and Vitamin E.
We recommend that if you have sensitive skin you are best to avoid essential oils. They can be quite harsh and irritate the skin.
Most conventional products on the market will likely also contain mineral oils (petroleum and paraffin), parabens, phthalates, PPG’s, Dye, sulphates, triclosan, Bisphenol (BPA) and Formaldehyde Donars. These can lead to mild allergic reactions such as rashes or skin irritations, or even more significant issues like lesions on the skin.
It is also recommended not to use soap as a body wash for sensitive, delicate or eczema-prone skin. Soap is extremely dehydrating and drying to sensitive skin and many types of soap will change the skin’s natural pH, obliterating healthy bacteria and stripping away vital oils. Lullaby’s Calming Body Wash is soap-free and contains over 80% organic Aloe Vera as well as organic chamomile to gently clean, soothe and protect sensitive skin.
Most sunscreens are also packed with synthetic fillers. Be mindful when buying that a cheap product usually contains cheap ingredients and these are likely to be chemical fillers. You are best to use a sunscreen with Vitamin E, such as Lullaby’s SPF50+ for Delicate skin, which avoids harsh ingredients. Often women avoid putting sunscreen on their face, which we all know is a beauty crime(!), because they find it causes breakouts and blocked pours. It’s important to know that only sunscreens with harsh chemicals will cause breakouts, whereas a high quality product will not.
What are the ingredients in baby products that work so well for sensitive skin?
Cold pressed Aloe Vera is a magic ingredient which is organically grown and cold pressed here in Australia. It moisturises, protects and heals sensitive skin. It is ideal for all skin types which is why it makes up 80% of all Lullaby’s products – we use it as a base, in contrast to other brands water-based products. In addition, Avocado oil, jojoba oil, chamomile and Vitamin E are all natural and nurturing ingredients for the skin.
