According to numerous researches, consuming potassium-rich foods have shown to help lower blood pressure.

Bananas are extremely rich in potassium and low in sodium.

According to the FDA diets rich in potassium and low in sodium may reduce the risk of blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

Consuming bananas helped reduce pressure on the kidneys and also helped in getting rid of excess sodium in the body by flushing extra sodium out of the system through urine.

Why is sodium so bad for those with high blood pressure?

Professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, Nancy Cook said: “When you eat too much salt, you body holds on to water in an effort to dilute it.

“This extra water increases your blood volume, which means your heart works harder because its pushing more liquid through your blood vessels.

“More strenuous pumping by the heart puts more force on the blood vessels.

“Over time, this increased force can raise blood pressure and damage blood vessels, making them stiffer which increases the risk of stroke, heart attack and heart failure.”

The American Heart Association said: “Foods that are rich in potassium are important in managing high blood pressure because potassium lessens the effects of sodium.

“The more potassium you eat, the more sodium you lose through urine.

“Potassium also helps to ease tension in your blood vessel walls, which helps further lower blood pressure.

“Increasing potassium through diet is recommended in adults with high blood pressure above 120/80 who are otherwise healthy.”
