If you’re going through pregnancy then you’re more likely to feel the unpleasant sensation but it can also occur in people who suffer from endometriosis or have a bladder infection.

Speaking to Stylist, midwives shed light on the little-known condition, which they say can be one of the most painful side effects of pregnancy.

What is ‘lightning crotch’?

The experts described the condition as sharp shooting pains in the vagina, rectum, or cervix.

MSK therapist Claire Gregory, who specialises in women’s health and exercise rehabilitation, told the publication: “I used to describe it as being stabbed in the vagina with a machete pain shooting right up inside my body that just came out of nowhere and literally made me have to stop whatever I was doing.”

While, Lesley Gilchrist, a registered midwife and co-founder of My Expert Midwife, says that it normally starts during the second or third trimester.

She said: “Although it’s not talked about that much, many women experience it at some point, especially as their pregnancy progresses”.

How can I treat pelvic pain?

If you are suffering from unexplained pelvic pain then the NHS recommends trying these treatments:

  • Antibiotics
  • Painkillers
  • Physiotherapy, such as exercises for the pelvic floor muscles
  • Hormone treatments

But the midwives say if you’re pregnant try getting your baby to shift position first.

They added that abominable support bandages can also provide a welcome relief.

Always check in with your GP if you're concerned about any pain or about your health.
