NHTSA Says Don’t Drive Your 2021 Ford F-150

The Ford Motor Company has just issued a recall notice for 2021 model year F-150 pickups which might carry faulty seat belts, impacting 16,430 trucks. An improper bit of seatbelt webbing may cause the belt’s restraint mechanisms to become inoperative during a motor vehicle accident. As a result, NHTSA is asking owners to park their brand-new F-150s in the name of safety.

According to RoadShow, recall notices will be sent to owners of affected F-150s beginning September 27. As part of the recall, Ford technicians will ensure the belts are properly routed. If they belts are found to be out of spec, an entire new seatbelt assembly will be provided free of cost. The automaker will also send information to owners on how to test their safety belts at home to check for the fault. Should any seatbelt fail the self-assessment, NHTSA suggests that seat not be used—and if the driver’s belt fails the test, drivers are asked not to use the truck at all. Ford notes that only Super Cab models are impacted, as these models use a unique belt assembly.

Recalls are an unavoidable part of the automotive industry. That said, recalls related to vital safety equipment are something to be mindful of. The Ford F-150 is the best-selling vehicle in the United States, so any recall involving this model is going to have a big impact. If you drive a new F-150 Super Cab, be safe out there until your belts come back with a clean bill of health. Furthermore, don’t take the self-assessment lightly. Your life could depend on it.
