Should you consider taking medication designed to treat erectile dysfunction, be aware that six disorientating sensations could occur. According to RXList, taking Viagra – which contains the active ingredient sildenafil – may cause nausea. Such an unpleasant side effect could be off-putting when trying to engage in the activity that you took the medication for in the first place. Some people may experience dizziness, or ringing in the ears, which can squash the desire for physical intimacy.

Another disorienting sensation one might endure is “an inability to differentiate between the colours green and blue”.

While this is unlikely to dampen the passion, it is disconcerting nonetheless.

Alternatively, side effects can include loss of hearing or memory problems.

Other side effects of Viagra can include:

  • Warmth or redness in the face, neck, or chest
  • Stuffy nose
  • Headaches
  • Stomach pain,
  • Upset stomach
  • Diarrhoea
  • Back pain.

The NHS stated: “Many men have no side effects or only mild ones.”

Nausea, dizziness, and a colour tinge to your vision is said to occur in “more than one in 100 people”.

The health body advises you to tell your doctor or pharmacist if these side effects bother you or do not go away.Aside from side effects, it’s key to note that sildenafil on its own will not cause an erection without arousal.

Furthermore, it can take up to one hour for sildenafil to work for erectile dysfunction.

“You can take it up to four hours before you want to have sex,” the health body stated. There are certain circumstances where taking sildenafil is “not suitable”.

For example, anybody who has recently had a heart attack should not take the erectile dysfunction medication.

Other health conditions that prevent a person from taking sildenafil include:

  • A recent stroke
  • Liver problems
  • Heart problems
  • Low blood pressure.

You must also check with your doctor if you have a “deformity of your penis” or Peyronie’s disease (i.e. curved penis).

If your health is otherwise in good condition, you can get the medication from a pharmacy or on the NHS.

People are advised not to take sildenafil more than once a day if it’s used to treat erectile dysfunction.

However, there does not seem to be any lasting harmful effects of taking the medication for a long time.

So, while you can only take the medication daily, it is possible to continue treatment for many months and years.
